Progress So Far

So far we've met twice to talk about the film festival. At the most recent meeting we worked on categories for the program and selected some articles to read about cultural studies that might help us with the conference. We've sent out surveys to Hispanic Studies and Latin American Studies professors asking them to tell us which films they think should be included in the film festival, but so far not many have replied. I'm not sure if it's because our topic is so broad or just because they are very busy, but maybe they will come up with something soon. We have to start viewing an selecting film pretty soon because the conference is not that far away!

  1. Having such a broad theme such as "Latin America and the World: Challenges and Opportunities" has its advantages and disadvantages. As Jackie mentions, we've surveyed professors about which films they would like represented in the film festival, along with suggestions from our peers; however, narrowing our topic to subcategories is the best decision we made at our meeting. I was feeling pretty lost before we met last week going around in circles in my film research trying to find films that fit our topic. I was overwhelmed with the amount of films I found and not enough time to show them in our weekend during the conference. After selecting subcategories such as Challenges and Opportunities (Globalization), Memory and Social Justice, the Latin American Environment, Human Trafficking, and U.S. Latino Challenges and Opprotunities we were much more successful in finding films to meet our topics. I find it challenging to have the authority to narrow down films which may or may not represent all the interests of the Latin American academia. But at the same time, it is very gratifying to see all of our efforts come together productively.
